Travel Smarter: Amtrak Fare Insights, Auto Train Changes, and Personal Updates

Travels with Kev Newsletter

Hello Reader,

Thanks for taking some time out of your day to chat about travel.

Today, we will compare Amtrak coach ticket fares, including the pros and cons. There is also a new schedule for the Auto Train.

I will also provide updates on my mom’s surgery and upcoming travel.

Amtrak Coach Fares: What’s the Difference?

Over the years, many travelers have asked me which is better: Amtrak’s Sale, Value, or Flex Coach fares. My answer is always: it depends!

Are you seeking flexibility in your travel plans, or are you prepared to go to the station now and looking to save money?

With the holiday season approaching, you may come across these options. I hope this email will assist you in selecting the best reservation for your next adventure.

While the most noticeable difference is the price, once you look a little deeper, there are more that separate them.

Sale Fares are an incredible deal but come with strict limitations:

  • Refunds: If canceled, you forfeit 50% of the ticket price.
  • Changes: Not allowed.
  • Availability: Limited and only offered during special sales.

Value Fares are budget-friendly and perfect for last-minute trips or solid plans.

  • Refunds: Receive 75% of your ticket price if you cancel before departure.
  • Changes: Amtrak says that no changes are allowed
  • Availability: Sale fares offer savings but can sell out quickly.

Flex Fares offer maximum flexibility, great for planning ahead:

  • Refunds: Get a full refund without fees if you cancel before departure.
  • Changes: Modify your plans with no change fees, but you’ll pay any you’ll fare difference.
  • Rewards: Since Flex Fares cost more, you’ll earn more Amtrak Guest Rewards Points!

I have used both fare types on the same trip. For instance, when going on a long-distance trip, I might book a Value Fare for the journey to Chicago but opt for a Flex Fare for the return, just in case.

The best fare for you is the one that best suits your travel style, whether you’re looking for affordability on quick trips or flexibility for more spontaneous plans!

New Times For The Auto Train

Amtrak announced a new schedule for the Auto Train starting November 10, 2024, departing one hour earlier. My article on the Auto Train compares the old and new schedules, boarding times, and station information.

What Kev Has Been Up To!

My mom is recovering well after her eye surgery and had a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday. She can now resume normal activities, within reason.

I’m getting ready to visit my sister, and unfortunately, I’ll be flying. This time, I’m breaking my personal travel rule by taking two 25-inch suitcases and a backpack.

I can check two bags for free on this flight, and since I’m getting dropped off and picked up, it’s manageable to justify the extra luggage. Let it be known that I am packing light for the 25-inch suitcases containing gifts from Grandma for my sister’s family. It’s cheaper than to ship them.

Initially, I had planned to take my mom on this trip, and we had booked this flight to bring those items with us. However, due to her surgery, she is unable to fly or travel right now. Therefore, the responsibility falls on me.

My thoughts are still with those in Florida. While my sister has missed most of these storms, my friends in St. Petersburg have not been as fortunate and will get hit by two storms within weeks of each other. Be safe out there; it is bad enough to get hit by one storm, but to get hit by another hurricane right after is devastating.

Here is the current information from Amtrak regarding its operations during the hurricane.
